Dried fruits are becoming popular as snack food. They are concentrated sources of energy; except for the fruit’s natural sweetness they have no additional sugar; and they contain significant amounts of minerals like iron, potassium, and selenium. These goodies are also excellent sources of fiber.
Golden Sultanas |
Raisins are the most popular dried fruit, available in the black and the white/golden varieties called sultanas. Other well-known dried fruit snacks are prunes or dried plums, which have laxative properties because of their fiber content; dates, which every pinoy/Filipino has tasted in the pastry food for the gods; and the dried versions of our local mango, guyabano, and pineapple.
Dried fruits are not only healthy snack choices; they can also be used for cooking. Add them to cookies, cakes, and pastries. Use them at breakfast to give a yummy boost to cereals and oatmeal. Enhance the flavor of sauces and main dishes with them. If you want something light, toss dried fruits with greens to make a salad.
